Chapter Fifteen

Jordan suppressed a sigh of relief when the last ones of their friends finally left. She put the chair back with the other table and slid into the booth next to Ellie.

“You haven’t said much,” Ellie remarked. “I heard you and Derek are on the warehouse shooting. Guy killed a co-worker?”

“Long story. We were about to question him when I got the call. Morgan Leigh…She’s dead.”

Ellie’s hand went to her mouth. “How?”

“Landlord went to collect the rent she owed him, found her dead with her throat slit. Killer didn’t touch the boy.”

“Oh my God.”

It wasn’t until Ellie’s very reasonable and human reaction to the event that Jordan realized she was close to tears, and not just because of a horrible crime.

“I was pretty bad. We’re still not sure who did it. Melissa told me she’ll have something for me tomorrow morning, and we’ll see Carlson after that.” She had to focus. Regardless of her emotions, they had the logical next steps all laid out. “I don’t like this idea of someone watching you and Clairmont. Kovac was close to him, and he was murdered. His girlfriend, who was spying on the Clairmonts, is in hiding. Please be careful.”

“I am. That’s why I’m going to ask him to come in, and I’ll check with Daniels first.”

“All right. We should go home, get some sleep. Meri will already be in bed.”

“Yeah. Come to think of it, I know we can never repay your parents for everything they are doing for us, but do you think Pauline would mind another half hour or so?”

Jordan had no trouble reading between the lines.

“I missed you today,” she said. “We can take a little more time.”

“That’s what I like to hear,” Dan, who had come by their table, said. “Can I bring you anything else?”

Ellie gave her empty glass a pensive look.

“We can take a cab,” Jordan reasoned.

“Another round, then? Can I also tempt you with dessert? I promise you, you don’t want to miss this apple pie. It’s Teddy’s Grandma’s recipe.”

“In that case we can’t say no. With two coffees.”

Jordan sent a text message to Pauline to give her an ETA. The answer came promptly. No problem. The little one is sleeping soundly, and I’m halfway through the movie. See you when you get here.

She leaned back into the booth, taking a sip, acknowledging the gratitude she felt despite the challenges they were both facing. All things considered, they were still extremely lucky though the fact that someone had bothered taking pictures of Ellie’s lunch with Miles Clairmont worried her.

“Show me that picture again,” she said, and Ellie obediently handed over her phone. Jill had sent her the photo earlier.

“We’ll bring it to the lab tomorrow?”

“Definitely.” Jordan zoomed in on the picture, as Dan brought their dessert.

Ellie sighed happily. “Sometimes it’s the little things that hit the spot, right? Not that this is little in any sense of the word. It’s a good thing we’re sharing, but we might have to walk home after this.
